This intriguing, suspenseful story is a perfect blend of sports, drama and technology - a must for the sports minded reader. The main character, Mike Nemsky, is a die-hard, dedicated Buffalo football fan, who not only is obsessed with the Buffalo team, but is a technical, analytical, brilliant-minded genius in his mid forties and alone. It's New Year's, 2002 when Mike suddenly realizes he has to take control of his destiny as a direct result of receiving a dreaded pink slip. "Football fans world-wide should read this novel! What a brilliant and futuristic eye opener!" - Larry Harrish, Space Coast Reviews "You will not bored with this read. Mr. Tanos has another winner!" - Shirley Johnson, Senior Reviewer, Mid West Book Review
"Richard P. Tanos shows imaginativeness and inventiveness in his exciting professional football drama, Controlled Defense. Football fans will never look at another game the same way again. His futuristic vision is brilliant and pleasing as each page leaves you wanting more. His writing is clear and concise and allows readers to adventure through the pages without interruption." - Hollie Keith, Editor In his small downtown Buffalo apartment, Mike designs and builds a software-based computer system, using a VCR, wireless technology, special circuitry, and a souvenir Buffalo helmet. In Mikes analytical, obsessive mind, all he has done is taken the technology of today and craftily massaged it, until what he has built will no doubt take professional football to the next level in the years to come. During a chance encounter in Fort Erie, Canada, with Sam Begalo, Director of Player Personnel for the Hamilton Cougars of the Canadian Professional Football League, Mike is quickly manipulated into an illegal, covert, and exciting journey into the world of professional football. Mike and Sal quickly give birth to the system only to assist the Hamilton Cougars in becoming a relentless powerhouse of a defensive football team. Being driven by his ultimate goal, which is an absolute obsession to help his favorite team, Buffalo, Mike is also being seduced by his sudden need for income. Mike relentlessly refines his system to perfection, which he proudly calls Digital Controlled Defense. The story takes another twist when Mike, fueled by a renewed confidence from the system, meets and falls for a woman named Carla. Mike tries to hide his invention from Carla, but her dominance thrusts her into Mike's illegal plan. Just as Mikes goals are met, something happens and tosses both Mike and Carla's world upside down -- "The Scandal in Hamilton."
Controlled Defense is certainly a technological roller coaster ride, for Mike, Sal, and Carla as they all assume their individual roles working with the system, including techno wizardry, greed, adaptation to real-life events, not to mention scary International border crossings. Since technology constantly seeks out new platforms to thrive, Mike's system will no doubt be used by all the professional football teams in the near future. For now, a surprise ending makes this story interesting, thrilling, and simply fun to read. Controlled Defense is dedicated to all the Buffalo fans, who for years have endured more disappointing seasons than winning ones--getting really close to the big dance four times, but never winning the big game, which is not only disappointing to the fans, but also heart breaking for the players. This novel is also dedicated to my son, Rich who is another die hard Buffalo fan. Rich I will tell you what I've always told you-- "Wait until next year!"
