Blue Roofs     by Richard Paul Tanos

In the late summer of 1991, Max, an aspiring author and software engineer from Canada, and Lorna, a financial specialist from Oklahoma, decided to start their new lives together in the city of Palm Bay, Florida.

After hurricane Andrew devastated south Florida in August of 1992, the entire state became more aware of these violent storms and revamped many emergency procedures. People now had a better understanding of how to prepare for these storms and the media began a whole new chapter in hurricane broadcasting.

This is a true story of Max and Lorna who adhered to the governor’s evacuation request for hurricane Frances and in doing so joined the 2.8 million people in what was the largest evacuation in Florida’s history. Three weeks later, Max and Lorna decided, like many others, to stay and ride out hurricane Jeanne. These two storms hit the east coast of Florida less than two miles from each other and then they both carved a path of destruction across the state not varying more than twenty miles apart.
